<p>On the 18th of June 2011, Team Astbury, the local youth windsurfing team based at Astbury Mere, went to Scotsman’s Flash, near Wigan, to compete in the second Team 15 event of the year.</p>
<p>Great weather, combining sun and wind, led to a fantastic event at the new venue, with lots of volunteers helping the event run so smoothly.</p>
<p>The racing was close and intense in every fleet, with particular excitement in the 3.5m fleet, which is the smallest sail size, with the newest and youngest sailors. The top two, consisted of Rosie Pearce from Team Astbury, and Ollie Mulhall from Windermere Rufwinds, who were both tied for points for the top position. In the end Rosie Pearce, from Team Astbury, took the top spot as she had the most consistent results out of the two.</p>
<p>Other good performances for Team Astbury include Mark Reynolds who came 2nd in the 6.8m fleet, and Ben Stone who came 2nd in the 5.8m fleet.</p>
<p>Matthew Turner, Head coach of Team Astbury said “It’s amazing to see the progression in our team in such a small amount of time. In just the three weeks since the last event everyone has really stepped up their game, and made it a lot harder for the competition.”</p>
<p>Alison Yates, Owner of Astbury Sailsports Ltd, based at Astbury Mere, the home of Team Astbury said “Everyone is sailing brilliantly at the moment, the rate of improvement has been phenomenal over the last few weeks, and its looking like a great season lies ahead of us.”</p>
<p>The final results were: -</p>
<p>1st West Kirby Warriors</p>
<p>2nd Team Astbury</p>
<p>3rd Hollingworth Hunters</p>
<p>4th Windermere Rufwinds</p>
<p>5th Glorious Glossop</p>

<p>On 4th of June 2011 there was a tense atmosphere at Astbury Mere, as the young sailors got fired up for the 2012 Olympics by holding their own Mini-Olympic event, in association with the Sail for Gold initiative being led by the RYA (Royal Yachting Association).</p>
<p>Sail for Gold is the RYA’s initiative aimed at inspiring people to try sailing and/or windsurfing to get a better understanding of the two Olympic Sports. With the Olympics around the corner there is no better time to get out on the water!</p>
<p>The mini-Olympics at Astbury Mere consisted of both windsurfing and dinghy sailing racing. Glorious sunshine and a decent breeze greeted the competitors on the Saturday morning, with competitors representing Great Britain, Jamaica, and Egypt with some good efforts at fancy dress for the chosen countries.</p>
<p>The racing was close in all the fleets, and the teams were very closely matched, with a good mix of experienced sailors and newcomers to the sports. Great Britain won the Dinghy sailing on tied points with Jamaica, only winning by the number of race wins, and took a decisive victory in the 5.5m2 and below windsurf fleet, whilst Jamaica took a brilliant victory in the 7.0m2 windsurf fleet.</p>
<p>This left the overall result very close, with the best four sailors from each team to count towards the final results. The final results were: -</p>
<p>1st Great Britain – 20 points</p>
<p>2nd Jamaica – 22 points</p>
<p>3rd Egypt – 25 points</p>
<p>Alison Yates, Centre Principal of Astbury Sailsports, had this to say about the event “Today was a really good day, there was a great buzz out on the water and everyone taking part had a fantastic time”</p>
<p>Matthew Turner, the Team 15 head coach for Team Astbury said “It was a great day to show our support for the Olympics, and our sailing athletes who will be competing at the 2012 Olympics, and to see the potential future Olympic athletes in action”</p>
